The scene: Me frantically cooking dinner and birthday cupcakes in the kitchen. Shane on his laptop in the kitchen. Caleb and Ana in the living room.
We hear Ana and Caleb bickering. Pretty minor. Easy to ignore.
Then Caleb yells and then cries. Ana SCREAMS and starts crying also.
Shane runs in the living room and yells in his man voice “QUIET! What happened!?”
Caleb says “Ana kicked me!!”
Ana says nothing but continues to bury her head in the couch and cry/scream. Obvious sign of guilt.
So Shane picks her up and says “Ana, did you kick Caleb? Why did you kick Caleb?”
Ana says, “Because I want to be a good girl!! WWHHHHHHAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!”
Shane: “Huh?… Because you want to be a bad girl?”
Ana: “NO!! I want to be a GOOD girl!”
Shane: “But what you did is bad.” He’s so baffled he doesn’t know what else to say.
And I’m laughing in the kitchen cause I know exactly what’s going on. Ana does this to me a lot during the day. She’ll fight with Charlotte and whack her or sit on her. Then I say something remotely in anger or even just frustration and she throws herself on the couch and cries.
She realizes she’s behaved badly and is overcome with guilt. She doesn’t like being the one that’s in trouble. When she and Charlotte fight, even if it’s Charlotte who is hurt, I end up spending the most time and energy helping Ana get over it.
So Shane comes in the kitchen holding Ana, who is still crying. He’s consoling her and then realizes what he’s doing and says “Wait a minute. You’re the one who was naughty.”
And then she starts bawling even louder.
And I say “Geez Shane. Stop reminding her of what she did or she’ll never get over it.”
And he says “What is happening here? I’m so confused.”
And I just laugh.
