I cannot understand why Catherine and Isabella are friends. I should think Isabella, being the dramatic and spirited girl she is, would find Catherine a bore. And I should think Catherine, being the kind and good-tempered girl she is, would find Isabella as unappealing as her brother, who she seems to be very much like as far as I can tell.
And I have to admit, there is yet to be one character for which I have constant affections. I find Catherine to be dull, Isabella to be conniving, and Mr. Thorpe to be annoying and occasionally infuriating. From the first encounter with Mr. Tilney, I thought he was wonderfully funny.
“Shall I tell you what to say (in your journal)”
“If you please.”
“I danced with a vary agreeable young man, introduced by Mr. King, had a great deal of conversation with him–seems a most extraordinary genius–hope I may know more of him. That, madam, is what I wish you to say.”
Oh! I decided to love him from this moment on! But then he ruined it for me in Chapter 10, when he gave poor Catherine such a hard time about speaking to Mr. Thorpe. His comparison with marriage and dancing was so strange!
In chapter 13, when Isabella is being so rude and manipulative trying to get Catherine to travel with them to Clifton, I thought about Mrs. Bennet. (Sorry about another reference to Pride & Prejudice, but it’s the only comparison I have to another JA book!) Mrs. Bennet was also very much into the dramatics. But I love her! I think the big difference is that Isabella is so selfish, while Mrs. Bennet was, in her eyes, acting in benefit of her daughters.
Perhaps I haven’t read enough. Maybe their characters will change and I will love some of them by the end of the book. I really hope so, because I want to love someone!
Are there any characters that you like early on?
